Are you Surprised?

I have to admit I am shocked that the State Supreme Court has upheld Proposition 8 in California banning same-sex marriage. Shocked! I've become a bit jaded in the belief that the people of this country have much say anymore. This decision has given me some hope that our system can, and still does, work. The fact that the majority of people in California voted to ban same-sex marriage says a lot.

What do y'all think about Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor? I haven't gotten excited this time around and didn't follow the speculation as to who Obama might pick. I mean, really, there's not a thing any of us can do about it. The time to be concerned about potential Supreme Court nominees under differing potential administrations was back before the election. I will say this... I find it interesting that it is acceptable for people to make comments against "white" males these days. I'm not into political correctness but... if a male were to make a similar comment about a woman there would be some backlash... regardless of ethnicity.

Doug Ross posted a RED ALERT on Monday, May 25, 2009, asking the question: Did anti-Obama campaign contributions dictate which Chrysler dealers were shuttered? (I found this through Gateway Pundit) The article is chilling. There have been many updates included as more people look into the possibility of some foul play in regard to which dealerships were to be shut down.

What are your thoughts on all of the above?

I am of the opinion that allowing government control over marriage is NOW and always shall be a bad idea. The only reason that it is there is for tax purposes. Flat tax (or national sales tax) rids us of these problems and marriage can go back to being what it supposed to be without government interference. (and as an added benefit, our tax system would quit penalizing success and promoting failures.)

Obama just continues his utter failure as a president. Sotomayor is yet another in his 100% success rate in picking the only the dumbest people for any position. Obama picks people that make HIM look smart, and to do that, he must pick simpering morons. Even Jonathan Turley says that she is dumb as a box of rocks. And Turley's a Nutrooter.

Chicago politics at its finest. Not only is our government run by really dumb people now, they are also corrupt to the core. Remember, ALL Democrats are criminals.

Hey Two Dogs,

I agree with you that government control over marriage is a bad idea but it has been that way for a long time and I don't think it is going to change where taxes are concerned. So... in the mean time we have to play with the hand we are dealt. I am heartened that the will of the voters has been upheld. There is something very wrong when voters vote a certain way and then it is overturned. That kind of thing happens over a myriad of things in many states. It makes you feel like voting is pointless. The whole idea of this country was based on the people having a say in things.

Everything is upside down where often times those in the minority are given special status. It is rare when things are decided on merit alone. There's this whole balancing of the scales thing that is ultimately very unfair. I find it interesting that, in politics in particular, when someone has worked hard to make it to the top and overcome many barriers... that that achievement is used to promote racial differences and create calls to make it easier for those who share their ethnicity and or sex rather than serve as an example of the truth that it is not about race or sex. It is about work ethic, perseverance and striving for more. I think it is awesome that there are so many examples of people that have achieved their dreams. I just wish that race/gender wasn't focussed on the way it is. I think it is fine to note it as maybe an additional barrier... but we are all Americans and members of the human race first. Or, at least, we should be.

Oh... if only Mr. McMonkey McBean could come along with his star off machine! That's from a Dr. Seuss story for you guys that may not be familiar with it. There was Star Belly Sneetches and Sneetches without. McBean's machine either took them off or put them on until everyone got confused as to who was better than whom.

Maybe someday we will get to where the color of our skin really does not matter. None of us chose our color. The thing that is so stupid is that whites are seen as being privledged just because they are white. That is not true. In a lot of ways whites are descriminated against because many businesses have diversity quotas to fill. It has more to do with a family's socio-economic standing. Poor white kids have the same problems as poor black or hispanic kids. These kids need to be taught to have a good work ethic and to believe they have all they need in order to achieve their dreams. Those that succeed succeeded because they didn't give up when it got hard.

Not surprised on Sotomayer. I'd never heard of her before, but I fully expected Obama to pick someone like her. There's all this hype about how her upbringing will bring a new perspective to The Court. The Constitution doesn't need the Justices' perspective; the Justices should draw their perspective from it.

Oh, now I get it. I didn't realize background and upbringing was so damn important.

That explains why the leftists fell all over themselves to ensure the confirmation of the only sitting justice who has experienced homelessness and was the son and grandson of poor, black sharecroppers.

Is Two Dogs a secret billionaire?

Otherwise I can't understand why he'd want to support a flat tax.

Firstly, we already pay one (look it up, 40% across the board) and secondly, the top 5% of Americans own 70% of the wealth in this country, yet pay a disproportionately small amount of tax (50%, I think) while the majority of people pay no income tax. What does this mean? That middle class CHUMPS like me and you end up paying far more than we deserve to.

If they're not careful, America will end up just like Britain - in which the middle class is taxed to death and regular people like me simply can't afford to live there.

Roland, an INCOME tax is on INCOME, not on WEALTH. Your comment regarding WEALTH is silly. The top 50% of wage earners pay 97% of all taxes. The bottom 50% vote Democrat. Half of the top 5% vote Democrat because they are actors, artists, and liberal arts people that have no clue or desire to learn a clue about how economics works.

By the way, I just received a letter last week from the IRS that said my personal income is now subject to self-employment tax, as well. I shall pay somewhere in the neighborhood of 65% of my income of 2008 in taxes. FAIR? Hardly.
